The American Academy of Pediatrics just published a new policy on marriage. While the focus in the media and in the announcement itself is about same gender civil marriage, I wanted to point out the most obvious and important aspect of this policy announcement. In the words of the announcement, "Because marriage strengthens families and, in so doing, benefits children’s development, children should not be deprived of the opportunity for their parents to be married. Paths to parenthood that include assisted reproductive techniques, adoption, and foster parenting should focus on competency of the parents rather than their sexual orientation." I wholeheartedly agree! Children deserve to be in loving, caring, competent families. The AAP reaffirms that this is best done in marital relationships. Research shows that children are resilient, and can thrive in many different family forms (including single parent households), it is also pretty evident in the literature that children do best when supported and raised in a household in which parents are married.
